Improve Your Smile with Root Coverage & Gum Grafting Procedures

At Mountainview Periodontics and Periodontics of Cherry Creek, we routinely treat gum recession with tissue grafts to improve your gum tissue’s stability, functionality, and aesthetics

If you have ever had gum recession, you are not alone. Gum recession affects up to 50% of adults in the United States. While it may not seem like a big deal, gum recession can lead to several problems, including tooth sensitivity and, in severe cases, even tooth loss.

So, why does gum recession cause tooth sensitivity?

When the gum tissue starts to pull away from the teeth (a process known as a gingival recession), it exposes the tooth’s root surface, making it more susceptible to sensitivity. Lost gum tissue and exposed roots can be caused by many factors, including gingival recession (i.e., when the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth), periodontitis (i.e., advanced gum disease), or aggressive tooth brushing. Regardless of the cause, lost gum tissue and exposed roots can be unsightly and lead to increased sensitivity and increased risk for tooth root decay.

In addition, when the gum tissue is damaged or missing, it can no longer provide adequate protection against bacteria. As a result, bacteria can enter the gums and cause inflammation. This inflammation can also lead to increased sensitivity.

Gum grafting is a periodontal procedure that restores lost gum tissue and, oftentimes, covers exposed roots. Gum grafting can help protect the roots from disease and further damage, preserving the stability of the teeth.  In addition, gum grafting can help to reduce sensitivity and prevent gum recession from getting worse. If you’re concerned about the stability of your teeth, be sure to ask us about gum grafting.  This procedure can make a big difference in your oral health and enhance your smile by covering exposed roots.
