Extractions

At Mountainview Periodontics, we do everything to help keep your teeth healthy and strong. Unfortunately, unwanted things can still happen. If a tooth is beyond restoration, we will need to extract it. We want to assure you that a tooth extraction is often our last choice, and after a tooth is removed, we offer a variety of cosmetic fixes. When you come to our office, you can know that you are in the best hands possible. If you have any questions about extractions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

What is a Dental Extraction?

Our goal of periodontal therapy is to save existing teeth or replace missing teeth. Upon evaluation and treatment, we may identify hopeless teeth and other teeth requiring extraction. Extractions may be performed during the diagnostic, non-surgical, or surgical phase of care to eliminate pain, infection, or periodontal defects and facilitate restorative treatment. Our fantastic team will be there to explain and help you through this process.

We offer various sedative options based on age and circumstance when we perform an extraction. We assure you that there should be little or no pain. If you are nervous about an extraction, we invite you to come into our office or give us a call so we can walk you through the procedure in greater detail.

Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

There are many different reasons for a tooth extraction today. Some of them include:

  • A Crowded Mouth: Overcrowding is a big reason for tooth extraction. When you have too many teeth in your mouth, it can lead to pain and tooth decay. We recommend pulling teeth to avoid these problems.
  • Infection: If your teeth are damaged or you experience tooth decay, your teeth may get to a point where they are beyond repair. In this case, we will need to extract a tooth to keep the rest of your mouth healthy.
  • Risk of Infection: If there is any sign of sickness that could come from another bodily issue, sometimes we may recommend pulling a tooth to help keep your body and teeth healthy.
  • Periodontal Disease: If your periodontal disease is extreme, we recommend pulling teeth that are beyond repair. We want to do what we can to keep your smile healthy and strong.

Whether due to decay, trauma, or infection, tooth extraction can bring immediate and needed pain relief! Tooth extraction may also be part of a cosmetic dentistry treatment plan, such as a total smile makeover with dental implants. If you may require a tooth extraction, you can trust us to provide you with an honest consultation, confirmation of your diagnosis, a discussion of all of your tooth replacement options, and answers to all of your questions.

After we extract a tooth, each person’s recovery time will vary. We recommend eating soft foods and avoiding a straw, and the sucking sensation could damage any stitches that exist. We will give you ice packs and gauze to help with swelling and bleeding. If the extraction causes a lot of pain, we will also prescribe a pain medication to help with any signs of discomfort. It is important that you take the pain medication exactly as instructed.
